How to Build a Dating App From Scratch: Features, Matching, and Cost

Building a dating app is deceptively easy to start and genuinely hard to get right. Two profiles, a swipe deck, and a chat screen is a weekend prototype. What turns that into a product people trust with their evenings, their photos, and their safety is everything underneath: matching that surfaces relevant people, real-time chat that feels instant, verification and moderation that keep bad actors out, and a monetization model that pays for all of it. This guide covers how to build a dating app from scratch — the features, the matching logic, the tech choices, and what actually drives the budget.

Decide what kind of dating app you’re building

“Dating app” covers products that share almost no engineering. Nail this down first, because it changes the data model, the algorithm, and the moderation load.

  • Swipe-based discovery (Tinder-style): high volume, location-first, fast matching. The hard problems are recommendation quality and moderation at scale.
  • Curated / slow dating (Hinge, Coffee Meets Bagel style): fewer, higher-quality matches per day, richer profiles, prompts instead of endless swiping.
  • Interest- or community-niche (by religion, profession, lifestyle, LGBTQ+): smaller audience, but matching leans on shared attributes and the trust bar is often higher.
  • Social / event-based: matching people around activities or groups rather than one-to-one swiping.

The niche decides how much effort goes into the recommendation engine versus community and verification. Write down the one behavior you want a new user to complete on day one — it anchors every later decision.

Core features every dating app needs

A first release doesn’t need every feature below, but it needs a coherent slice of them.

  • Onboarding and profiles. Sign-up (phone/OTP or social login), then photos, a bio or answered prompts, and structured attributes (age, location, interests, what they’re looking for). Those structured fields aren’t decoration — they’re the inputs your matching logic runs on, so design them before the UI.
  • Discovery / the deck. Where a user sees candidate profiles one at a time and likes or passes. Behind it sits a queue — a ranked list your backend decided to show. Two people liking each other creates a match, which unlocks chat.
  • The match list. A record of mutual likes and any “who liked you” surface (often paid). This is where relationship state lives — matched, unmatched, blocked, expired.
  • Real-time chat. One-to-one messaging that opens after a match, with read receipts, typing indicators, push notifications when the app is closed, and reporting and blocking inside the conversation itself.
  • Notifications and re-engagement. Push and in-app alerts for new matches and messages. Dating apps live on bringing people back, so this is core, not polish.
  • Trust and safety controls. Report, block, photo verification, and the moderation pipeline behind them — a core feature, for reasons covered below.

The matching algorithm: how it actually works

“Matching algorithm” sounds like one thing; in practice it’s a ranking problem — given a user, order everyone else by how likely they are to be a good, mutual match, and show the top of the list. Start simple.

Rule-based filtering (start here)

Every app begins with hard filters: distance radius, age range, gender preference, and “don’t show people I already swiped or blocked.” That alone is a working product for a small user base — just database queries, a geospatial lookup (PostGIS, MongoDB geo indexes, or a geohash scheme) plus preference filters. Don’t skip to machine learning; most of the perceived quality early on comes from getting these filters and freshness right.

Weighted scoring

Next, rank the filtered pool with a score built from shared interests, profile completeness, recent activity (active users first), and mutual-preference fit. You assign weights, tune them by hand, and sort. It’s transparent, cheap to run, easy to debug — and where many successful apps stay for a long time.

Behavioral signals, and the two-sided catch

Once you’ve accumulated swipe data, you can rank by behavior — who tends to like whom, predicting the probability a like gets returned. That’s a recommendation-systems problem (collaborative filtering or a learned model) that only works at volume; build it too early and you’re tuning on noise. The twist unique to dating is that a match needs both people to say yes. Show the most-liked profiles to everyone and you overwhelm a few users and starve the rest, so good systems balance exposure so a wider set of people get real matches — fairness tuning that matters as much as raw relevance, and why off-the-shelf recommendation code rarely fits a dating product cleanly.

Real-time chat: the tech that makes it feel instant

Chat is where users spend their time and the feature most often underestimated. The core requirement is a persistent connection so messages arrive without polling.

  • Transport: WebSockets are the standard — Socket.IO (Node.js), Django Channels, Elixir/Phoenix Channels, or a managed service.
  • Build vs. managed: run your own messaging layer, or use a managed platform (Firebase, Stream, Sendbird, PubNub). Managed services give you delivery/read receipts, presence, and push quickly and scale for you; the trade-off is per-user pricing and less control. For a first release it’s often the pragmatic choice — you can move off it later.
  • Persistence: messages need storing (Postgres, Cassandra, or the managed store) so history survives reconnects and new devices.
  • Offline delivery: when the app is closed the message arrives via push — APNs for iOS, FCM for Android — so chat and notifications are tied together.
  • Safety inside chat: report/block one tap away, plus automated screening for abuse and scam patterns (links, off-platform contact requests).

Getting typing indicators, ordering, and reconnection right is fiddly work — the single feature where a proven mobile app development team or a managed backend saves the most time versus building from zero.

Trust and safety is a core feature, not a checkbox

This is what separates a real dating product from a demo, and where inexperienced builds get into trouble. Dating apps attract fake profiles, scammers, and harassment at a rate most apps never see. You need this from day one.

  • Photo / identity verification. A common approach is selfie verification: the user mirrors a pose or gesture, and the image is compared against their profile photos to confirm a real person. Some apps add ID checks for higher-trust tiers.
  • Automated moderation. Screen uploaded photos and message text automatically — cloud vision APIs (AWS Rekognition, Google Cloud Vision, Hive) flag nudity and prohibited content; text classifiers catch abuse and known scam patterns. Automation handles volume; it doesn’t replace people.
  • Human review and reporting. A moderation queue and an admin panel where a real person reviews reports and edge cases. Budget for it operationally — moderation is ongoing, not a one-time build.
  • Block, report, and rate limiting. Instant block and report, plus limits (on messages, likes, new-account activity) to blunt spam and bots.
  • Privacy and location. Never expose exact coordinates — show approximate distance, not a pinpoint. Handle personal data under GDPR and comparable laws, and meet the app stores’ own dating-category and safety rules.

Skimp here and the failure isn’t a bug ticket — it’s user harm, chargebacks, app-store removal, and a reputation you can’t rebuild. This is the part of the roadmap to over-invest in, not under.

Monetization models that work

Dating apps almost never charge for sign-up — the network needs scale to be useful, so the front door is free. Revenue comes from a mix:

  • Subscriptions (the workhorse): a premium tier — see who liked you, unlimited likes, advanced filters, location change, read receipts. Recurring revenue is the backbone of the category.
  • Consumable purchases: one-off boosts (temporarily raise visibility) and super/priority likes. These monetize intent in the moment.
  • Freemium limits: free users get a capped number of likes per day; paying removes the cap. The free tier has to stay genuinely usable or the network never grows.
  • Advertising: viable only at large scale, and it competes with the experience, so most apps lean on subscriptions first.

One constraint founders miss: in-app purchases and subscriptions on iOS and Android run through Apple’s and Google’s billing, which take a platform commission. That cut has to be in your unit economics from the start — it shapes what you sell and at what price.

A realistic tech stack

There’s no single correct stack, but a maintainable, common one looks like this:

  • Mobile clients: native (Swift, Kotlin) for the smoothest camera, performance, and platform feel — or cross-platform with Flutter or React Native to share one codebase, which usually cuts time-to-market when the UI is fairly standard.
  • Backend: Node.js, Python (Django/FastAPI), Go, or Elixir — Elixir/Phoenix is a natural fit when real-time chat and presence are central.
  • Database: PostgreSQL with PostGIS for location is a strong default; add Redis for the swipe queue, sessions, and rate limiting.
  • Chat: WebSockets on your backend, or a managed layer (Stream, Sendbird, Firebase) to start.
  • Media & delivery: object storage (S3) plus a CDN for photos, with moderation on upload; FCM/APNs for push; OTP or social login for auth.
  • Admin & moderation: an internal dashboard for review, reports, and user management — easy to forget when scoping, and always needed.

You won’t build all of it before launch, but choosing the location strategy, the chat approach, and the moderation pipeline early prevents the expensive rewrites that come from bolting them on later.

What drives the cost

Anyone quoting a fixed price before seeing your requirements is guessing. The budget is driven by scope, not the words “dating app”:

  • Matching sophistication — rule-based filtering is affordable; a behavioral recommendation engine is a specialized, ongoing investment.
  • Chat — building your own messaging infrastructure versus a managed service is a real fork in cost and maintenance.
  • Trust and safety — verification, automated moderation, an admin panel, and the people to run it: a recurring operational cost, not just build time.
  • Platforms — iOS-only, Android-only, or both plus web and the admin backend.
  • Design — dating apps live on feel, so custom, animation-rich UI costs more, and it matters more here than in most categories.
  • Scale from day one — servers, media, push, and moderation APIs grow with users, so much of the cost is operational, not one-time.

The useful way to budget is to scope a tight MVP — one matching approach, chat via a managed layer, verification and reporting in place — ship it to a real audience, then fund later phases from actual usage.

Build it yourself, or hire a team?

If you’re a developer building a portfolio project or a small niche app, you can build a basic version yourself — a managed backend removes much of the hardest infrastructure work, and the matching queue, real-time reliability, and moderation will take far longer than they look. If it’s a product tied to revenue and users’ safety, the calculus changes. The failure mode usually isn’t “the first version was hard to write” — it’s that the matching didn’t produce real matches, chat felt laggy, or bad actors made the app feel unsafe, and the network never reached the size that makes a dating app work. Those are exactly the areas where working with a team that has handled dating app development before pays off most.

Planning a dating app?

The fastest path to a launch that holds up is scoping the MVP around one clear matching approach and getting chat, verification, and moderation right from the start. We build location-based, real-time apps end to end, from the matching engine to the moderation pipeline. Bring your idea and constraints, and we’ll help you scope a first release you can actually ship.
